Most money is stolen not by hacking, but by convincing you to hand over the keys. This is the short list of things you must never share or install — no matter who is asking or how urgent it sounds.
Never share these
- Your card PIN or UPI PIN. No bank, app, or “support agent” ever needs it. A PIN is for you to enter, never to say aloud.
- Your full OTP. Genuine staff never ask for it. Anyone requesting it is trying to complete a transaction on your account.
- Your full password. Real support can help you without it.
- Card number, CVV, and expiry together. That combination is enough to spend your money online.
Never install these on request
If anyone asks you to install a “remote support” or screen-sharing app — AnyDesk, TeamViewer, QuickSupport, or similar — to “help fix your account” or “process your withdrawal,” stop. Once installed, they can see your screen and control your phone, including reading OTPs and approving payments. Legitimate support never needs remote control of your device.
The one-line rule
If a message, call, or app is pressuring you to share a secret or install something so it can “help,” that pressure is the scam. Hang up, close the chat, and if needed contact your bank directly using the number on your card.
Get help or report a scam
If you’ve lost money to a scam app, report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. If gambling is affecting your life or someone you love, you can reach the free, confidential mental-health helpline Tele MANAS at 14416. Asking for help early is a strength, not a weakness.
