India has a national system for reporting online financial fraud, and using it quickly gives you the best chance of recovering money. Here is how it works and what to have ready.
Call 1930 first
1930 is the national cyber-fraud helpline. Call it as soon as you realise money has been taken. The sooner a complaint is registered, the sooner banks can be alerted to try to freeze the funds before they are withdrawn by the fraudster.
File online at cybercrime.gov.in
Go to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Choose to report a financial fraud, register with your mobile number, and fill in the details of what happened. You will receive an acknowledgement number to track your complaint.
What to have ready
- Date, time, and amount of each transaction.
- Transaction IDs, UPI reference numbers, and the account or UPI you paid to.
- Screenshots of the app, chats, and payment confirmations.
- Any phone numbers, links, or names the scammer used.
- Your bank account and card details for the affected account.
After you file
Note your acknowledgement number and follow up with your bank, quoting the complaint. You can also report the fraudulent UPI ID to your payment app. Keep copies of everything. Recovery is never guaranteed, but prompt, documented reporting gives you the strongest possible case.
Get help or report a scam
If you’ve lost money to a scam app, report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. If gambling is affecting your life or someone you love, you can reach the free, confidential mental-health helpline Tele MANAS at 14416. Asking for help early is a strength, not a weakness.
