You’ve Been Scammed — The First-Hour Action Plan

If you have just realised a betting or bonus app has scammed you, act quickly and calmly. The first hour is when you can do the most to limit the damage. Work through these steps in order.

1. Stop the money

Block your debit and credit cards, pause any UPI AutoPay mandate, and freeze the wallet or account you used if you can. If money is actively moving, call your bank’s fraud line immediately using the number on your card.

2. Secure your accounts

From a device you trust, change the passwords on your email and bank. If you installed an APK or granted SMS or accessibility permissions, assume the phone may be compromised — run a security scan and consider a factory reset after backing up your data.

3. Report it fast

Call the national cyber-fraud helpline 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible. Fast reporting genuinely improves the chance of freezing the transferred money before it disappears. The next article walks through exactly how to file.

4. Preserve evidence

Take screenshots of the app, chats, transaction IDs, UPI references, and any phone numbers used. Do not delete messages — they help investigators trace the money.

5. Be kind to yourself

Scams are designed by professionals to fool careful people. Falling for one is not a personal failing. Deal with the practical steps first, and if the loss is weighing on you, talk to someone you trust or a helpline. You are not alone in this.
