This week was about containment: making sure that even if you encounter a bad app, it cannot reach your bank. Here is everything in one place.
The essentials
- Block the dangerous permissions. No game needs to read your SMS, watch your notifications, or use accessibility services.
- Guard your OTP. Malicious apps, fake calls, cloned pages, and SIM swaps all target it. Never share it; prefer an authenticator app.
- Check your UPI AutoPay mandates. Cancel any recurring authorisation you did not intend to set up.
- Never share secrets or install remote-access apps on anyone’s request.
- Know the signs of an infected phone and act fast: disconnect, uninstall, scan, change passwords, reset if unsure.
Do this once, today
Spend ten minutes now: review app permissions, check your UPI mandates, and turn on two-step verification for your Google and bank accounts. It is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
Next week shifts from security to the money itself — how these apps are designed to win, and why “one more bet” is the most expensive sentence in gambling.
Get help or report a scam
If you’ve lost money to a scam app, report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. If gambling is affecting your life or someone you love, you can reach the free, confidential mental-health helpline Tele MANAS at 14416. Asking for help early is a strength, not a weakness.
