You do not need to be technical to keep your phone and money safe. Work through this simple checklist once, and you will have closed the doors that scammers rely on.
The checklist
- Lock your screen with a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint so no one can use your phone if it is lost.
- Install apps only from the Play Store. Keep “install unknown apps” turned off.
- Turn on Google Play Protect to scan apps automatically.
- Review app permissions. Remove SMS, notification, and accessibility access from anything that does not clearly need it.
- Keep the phone updated. Security updates fix the holes criminals use.
- Use a strong, unique password for your Google and bank accounts, and turn on two-step verification.
- Set a separate UPI PIN you do not use anywhere else.
- Back up photos and contacts so a factory reset is never a disaster.
Two habits that matter most
First, never install an app someone sends you in a chat. Second, never share a PIN or OTP with anyone. Almost every phone-based scam depends on breaking one of these two rules — hold them, and you are far safer than most.
Get help or report a scam
If you’ve lost money to a scam app, report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. If gambling is affecting your life or someone you love, you can reach the free, confidential mental-health helpline Tele MANAS at 14416. Asking for help early is a strength, not a weakness.
